“Get up and go to the principal’s office!” was the common phrase I had to use in front of a group of devil 3rd grade students who would get into fights and pulled on hair and tore shirts apart. It was a struggle for me to get up each morning to teach these kids how to behave and be civil. I tried not to blame them.

These kids have a tough childhood. Growing up among the Los Angeles United School District, these kids were born from poverty, which these kids came from nothing and continued to have nothing. They grew up with ruthless parents, who had to fight to survive and demand their rights. It was not easy living in a community where it is easy to choose bad than good, easy to join a gang and smoke cigarettes and be pregnant when you were already 15 years old.

I felt bad. I tried and fought so hard, formulating more parent teacher meetings. Teachers blamed it on the parents’ for bad parents and parents blamed it on the school for bad teaching. It was a double loss situation and no one wanted to put in the work to improve the education system, cirriculum, and its student. It was a routine and constant battle of kids screaming and teaching yet teachers are turning a blind eye for the mundane 8 hour school job and future pension.

This is a story about me making thousands of dollars babysitting an 11-year old daughter with extremely wealthy Gatsby-like parents.

For the past three years, I have been a sophomore English teacher for the Los Angeles United School District for the past three years. It was a broken education system with mundane routine teachers who o not care anymore. Threatening students and condescending parents were the worst. it was a broken system that no one wanted to fix and for those who desired to fix it were ridiculed, like me.
