“What is one thing you would tell your younger self?”

Most people advise us to “live a little reckless, take risks, and fall in love.” Some say all that really matters are people — family, friends, and kids. They tell us to find a mentor or a role model and to cherish them to the fullest.

Although I believe people matter in our lives and they do, but they do not exist forever. I’ve had a decent childhood and I admit that I did all those things but one thing I found truly important was aside from that. We were born into this world alone and what we take away away is nothing beyond the horizons.

The truth is..

Instead of investing in people or experiences because people are unpredictable and places change overtime, invest in yourself. A mother may give up on you when she finds out you’re a drug addict. Your husband can divorce you when he decides that he doesn’t love you anymore. At the end of the day, people come and go and I’m not denying you from preventing any human relationship formation but I’m saying don’t let it be your everything. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Friendships, relationships, family. They all come and go but one person and thing always stays and truly matters — yourself.

I had some amazing yet traumatic experiences in my life — including climbing Mt. Everest and spending four years in a hospital fighting for my life, recovering and succumbing to…
